Couch Wars – Your Baby, Your Pets, Their World

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The world of your pet and your baby will never be the same once that baby gets control of his or her legs. We’ve all seen it on America’s Funniest Home Videos but somehow it just doesn’t click until that first time they’re going head to head over the couch, a food bowl or just a random collision in the hallway. Dad be ready and start working on the scenarios where your pets world and your child’s world become one.

For us it took about 7 months. Our cats sniffed the baby a few times when we brought her own and then minded their own business. I’m not a cat person but I have to say our cats are good like that when it comes to our baby. However at around the 5-6 month mark our infant started getting better control over that little body. Scooting, crawling and now with the help of a walker she’s moving around with those little arms stretched out grabbing anything she can. Guess what the number one target is:

My thoughts are that we’ll have to let them collide. The baby won’t leave the cat alone and I don’t want the cat running from the baby all the time so I’ll have to eventually let the cat land a couple of blows to the head of the baby. It won’t hurt her because kitty doesn’t have claws but it’ll let her know to keep her hands off the kitty unless the kitty says ok.

My advice is to try and get an early detection on how your pet will do with toddlers and babies. We already knew this cat would be trouble because he’s slapped my niece and a couple of other toddlers already.

Be Aware of First Father’s Day

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Strange enough I didn’t even know father’s day was coming up.   It’s typically been no big deal in the past because my dad’s so easy going.   We just get together and have some food and relax on the couch which is basically our family tradition.   Watch a movie together and chill.  However…

Your wife will have treated the first father’s day like tax day.

Look dude it’s serious business.   The way I found out father’s day was coming was my wife got frustrated with me for making it difficult to surprise me.   Your wife will be the same way because to them first time things like this are a huge deal and they want to be thoughtful.   So be aware and leave your calendar open and free.

If you’re looking for father’s day gift ideas mom I was really happy with mine.   My wife went to a Potteryworks and painted me a beer mug with my daughter’s hand and foot prints put on the mug.   She also got me a water cup that allows pictures to be put inside it so I have a world’s greatest dad handmade cup with my baby on it.   Simple, easy and useful which I love.

A Word on Doors and Slamming Objects:

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I just got in trouble which brings up this post based on a paragraph I wrote a few months back when we first got our new baby.   This is one of the first things you’ll want to learn or become conscious of when you’re getting ready to having your new baby in the house.

Boys and therefore men are louder than women on average.   Much louder in fact you’ll find the first time your wife looks at you like she wants to stab you due to slamming of a door, loud clicking of a latch, dropping a box on the ground, etc.   At the time of this paragraph our baby is around 2 months old and I’ve probably startled her in this method around 7 times.   Twice I distinctly remember were in the middle of the night due to the long night that follows.   Mind you I’m not saying you must be quiet because lots of babies can sleep through any racket however sudden startling noises that most men make often need to be minded.   Start practicing now!
